Reminder: Pencader information session tonight

Release Date: Feb 26, 2013 10:50 AM

Delaware Department of Education leaders remind Pencader Business and Finance students and their families of a gathering tonight where they can learn more about enrolling in another school for next year.

The informational session will run from 6 to 8 p.m. in the school gymnasium at 170 Lukens Drive in New Castle. It will feature tables manned by representatives from other district and charter high schools who will answer questions and share about their schools with perspective families. Representatives from the state’s Charter School Office and School Climate Office also will be on hand to answer questions and to address concerns families have expressed about school climate.

The department will work with school leadership to plan additional meetings on alternate days and times if needed to accommodate the families’ schedules. The state also has set up a designated email address (pencaderinfo@doe.k12.de.us) and phone number  -- (302) 735-4014  -- for families to write or to call with questions.

In addition to their district feeder pattern schools, students may apply for schools through the state’s Choice program. While the Choice application deadline was in January, the closure of their school is considered “good cause” under the law to allow the students to participate. The area districts report the following availability in their schools:

  • Brandywine: Choice availability at Brandywine and Mount Pleasant; waiting list at Concord
  • Christina: Choice availability at Christiana, Glasgow and Newark
  • Colonial: Choice availability at William Penn
  • Red Clay Consolidated: Choice availability, information on specific schools to be determined (the district’s Choice permission forms are due from parents March 15)
  • New Castle County Vo-Tech: Choice availability, information on specific schools to be determined (process not complete until May)
  • Appoquinimink: Availability for students in the district’s feeder pattern

Some charter schools, including Delaware Academy of Public Safety and Security, also have openings.

The State Board of Education voted Thursday to revoke the charter of Pencader Business and Finance school at the end of this academic year. The revocation had been recommended by Secretary of Education Mark Murphy and the Charter School Accountability Committee. The committee’s final report, available here, outlines the governance, administrative, academic, financial and other problems at the school. More information on the board’s decision is available here.

The state Department of Services for Children, Youth and their Families is coordinating with the school to have a support team available for students as they cope with news of their transition next school year. Representatives also will be available tonight.
