State announces information for Pencader families

Release Date: Feb 22, 2013 11:55 AM

Delaware Department of Education officials will host a meeting for Pencader families at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb.  26th at the school to help parents and students learn more about enrolling in another school for next year. The department will work with school leadership to announce additional meetings on alternate days and times if needed to accommodate the families’ schedules.

In addition to their district feeder pattern schools, students may apply for schools through the state’s Choice program. While the Choice application deadline was in January, the closure of their school is considered “good cause” under the law to allow the students to participate.

Representatives from other district and charter high schools will be at Tuesday’s meeting to share more information about their schools with perspective families.

The state also has set up a designated email address (pencaderinfo@doe.k12.de.us) for immediate use and phone number (302) 735-4014 that will be active on Monday for families to call with questions. The Department of Services for Children, Youth and their Families is coordinating with the school to have a support team available for students on Monday as they cope with news of their transition next school year (students are not in session today because of a previously scheduled in-service day).

The meeting will be held at the school at 170 Lukens Drive in New Castle.

The State Board of Education voted Thursday to revoke the charter of Pencader Business and Finance school at the end of this academic year. The revocation had been recommended by Secretary of Education Mark Murphy and the Charter School Accountability Committee. The committee’s final report, available here, outlines the governance, administrative, academic, financial and other problems at the school. More information on the board’s decision is available here.
