Second public hearing added for Pencader formal review

Release Date: Feb 6, 2013 12:00 PM

The Delaware Department of Education and State Board of Education have scheduled a second public hearing as part of Pencader Charter School’s formal review process. The second hearing will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 at Delaware Technical & Community College’s Stanton campus at 400 Stanton Christiana Road. The original hearing remains scheduled for Monday, Feb. 11 at the department’s Collette Education Resource Center, 35 Commerce Way, Dover. Its start time has been moved back to 6:30 p.m.

Last month, the state’s Charter School Accountability Committee recommended revocation of the New Castle school’s charter. A copy of the committee’s final report is available here.  The next step of the process is a public hearing. Secretary of Education Mark Murphy then will take into consideration the committee’s report and the hearing transcripts before making his recommendation to State Board of Education members, who will consider the matter at their Feb. 21 meeting.

The department and State Board leadership decided to offer a second hearing to provide additional opportunities for school and community participation. The hearings also are being scheduled at a later hour and the second at a New Castle County location to allow additional community feedback.

Those who cannot attend the hearings also may submit written comments through Feb. 13 to jcarwell@doe.k12.de.us and drjohnson@doe.k12.de.us or by mail to the Delaware Department of Education’s Charter School Office, 401 Federal Street, Dover, DE 19901.
