Students win 'NAEP in Delaware' poster, video contest

Release Date: Jan 18, 2013 4:00 PM

Students from three schools are winners in the state’s poster and video contest to raise awareness about the upcoming National Assessment of Educational Progress.

First prize winner is  Isaac VanCuren of Sussex Tech High School for a video available online. A group of Gallaher Elementary students in the Christina School District will share the first place prize for their age category for a video available online.   Runner-up prize goes to Sadia Shahid of William Penn High School in the Colonial School District for a poster available online here (Poster).

Secretary of Education Mark Murphy thanked all the students who entered the contest for their hard work and creativity, which will help spread awareness in the state about the importance of NAEP.

NAEP, also known as the Nation’s Report Card, will be administered this school year to students across the country in grades 4, 8 and 12. About 20,000 students in Delaware will take the 90-minute reading or math test between January 28 and March 8.

In addition to showing the strengths of our public school system, potential employers also will have the chance to see the strengths of their future workforce in Delaware.

“The nation will use NAEP results to judge the talents of our students and the work of our educators in comparison with those in other states,” Murphy said. “NAEP is a chance for Delaware to showcase how the hard work going on by those in our schools is paying off.”

For the contest, students – including those in NAEP 2013 participating schools – were invited to submit posters or short videos that highlight key messages about NAEP.  First-place prizes are $500 Apple gift cards; the runner-up prize is a $250 Apple gift card. Contest entries were judged on how now well they creatively and clearly communicate the answers to the following questions: What is NAEP? Why is it important? Why should students try their best on the test?
