Delaware taking applications for state nominations for federal Green Ribbon Schools award

Release Date: Nov 14, 2012 12:50 PM

Delaware Secretary of Education Mark Murphy invites public and private K-12 schools to apply to be a state nominee for the U.S. Department of Education's Green Ribbon Schools award.

The program – now in its second year -- recognizes schools for exemplary achievement and considerable progress in three areas: 1) reducing environmental impact and costs; 2) improving the health and wellness of students and staff; and 3) providing effective environmental and sustainability education by incorporating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), civic skills and green career pathways.

“We know schools across Delaware are implementing innovative initiatives to reduce their environmental impact and to promote student learning in these areas,” Murphy said. “This is a great opportunity to showcase nationally the great work already underway here.”

Each participating state may submit up to four nominations for the award to the U.S. Department of Education. Winning schools will be recognized at a national ceremony.  State recognition will include a Delaware winner in each of the three focus areas. Schools that qualify in all three areas could be nominated for national recognition.

"Under Governor Markell's leadership Delaware is emerging as a national leader in both educational performance and environmental health," said Collin O’Mara, Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. "Through the Governor's Children in Nature Initiative, DOE and DNREC are partnering to introduce Delaware's youth to our natural resources, improve school performance, encourage environmental stewardship and reduce childhood obesity. The Green Ribbon School program is an important part of this statewide effort and we applaud Secretary Murphy and the whole DOE team for encouraging our schools to compete on the national stage."

State applications, available here, are due Feb. 1, 2013.

More information and resources are available on the official Green Ribbon Schools website here.
