Delaware students demonstrate workforce-ready skills at national competition

Release Date: Jul 5, 2012 8:00 AM

When Olivia Keech first arrived at the sheet metal contest at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Championships in Kansas City, Mo., last week, some of the male competitors initially questioned whether or not she was in the right place.  One even suggested that she should have been in the cosmetology contest.  They must not have seen her win Gold at the 2011 contest.  The Delcastle Technical High School student repeated as the Gold medal winner again this year. Olivia was in the right place with the right stuff. So were many of her Delaware teammates.

In fact, 24 Delaware SkillsUSA students finished in the top 10 against the best in the nation as they demonstrated their workforce-ready skills in SkillsUSA National competitions.  One SkillsUSA teacher, James Berman of Delcastle, also won Region I Advisor of the year.

The purpose of SkillsUSA is to promote learning and foster industry connections for skilled and technical sciences high school students.  SkillsUSA’s Motto is “prepared with the skills America needs.”
