Seven Delaware students named semifinalists in U.S. Presidential Scholars Program
Seven Delaware students have been named semifinalists in the 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. From nearly 3.2 million graduating high school seniors, about 3,300 students were identified as candidates for the program and about 550 have been named semifinalists. Up to 141 students will be chosen as 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
Students are chosen for outstanding academic and artistic achievement as well as school leadership and community involvement.
“These students excel in and out of the classroom,” Secretary of Education Dr. Lillian M. Lowery said. “Their exemplary performance makes them well deserving of this recognition and honor. They represent our state well.”
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. In 1979, it was expanded to also recognize students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, literary and performing arts.
The Commission on U.S. Presidential Scholars will meet this month to select the winners. As with the semifinalists, the scholars are chosen on the basis of their accomplishments in academics and the arts, leadership and school/community involvement.
Scholars will be announced in May.

- Pratyusha Gupta of Dover (Caesar Rodney High School)
- Davison L. Hammond of Middletown (St. Andrew’s School)
- Alan Y. Wang of Hockessin (Charter School of Wilmington)
- Linda M. Wang of Hockessin (Charter School of Wilmington)
- Gina M. Wong of Wilmington (Charter School of Wilmington)
- Claire Y. Yang of Newark (Charter School of Wilmington)
