Former Secretary Lowery announces teacher appreciation student essay contest

Release Date: Apr 2, 2012 11:05 AM

The Delaware Department of Education once again will be sponsoring a student essay contest for Teacher Appreciation Week in May.

America’s top educators recently released a book with advice for new teachers entering the field. In “Letters to a New School Teacher,” each of the 2011 state teachers of the year shared insight.

2011 Delaware State Teacher of the Year Joseph Masiello, a 6th grade English teacher at Red Clay Consolidated School District’s Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington, said: “Upon entering your classroom each morning, leave your ego at the door. Teaching is about the children; always remember that each and every choice or decision you make must be in the best interest of your students. Teaching is all about the kids – not an interrupted planning period or a missed lunch or what makes the teacher comfortable: It’s about the children first.”

Secretary of Education Dr. Lillian M. Lowery knows Delaware’s students are the best observers of the great work of our teachers happening every day in Delaware schools. That is why she wants to know what advice Delaware’s public school students would give new teachers: “What do you see in your current teacher that you’d like new teachers to emulate?”

Students should share their thoughts in 350 words or fewer and submit by Friday, April 20th.  Entries should be emailed to public information officer Alison Kepner at akepner@doe.k12.de.us with the subject line “Great Teaching Essay Contest.”  Handwritten entries should be scanned and emailed. Each entry must include: student’s name, grade, school and district (if applicable) as well as the teacher’s name and subject taught (if applicable). Students should write about one of their current teachers.

Former Secretary Lowery will announce the winners – one each in three grade categories (Pre-K to 4, 5 to 8 and 9 to 12) in May in conjunction with Teacher Appreciation Week. She will visit each winning student/teacher’s classroom to deliver certificates and Visa gift cards ($50 for students and $100 for their teachers).
