Delaware Students to Vie in Construction Trades Competition

Release Date: Feb 21, 2012 1:00 PM

Teams of Delaware students will be performing skills in residential carpentry, plumbing, electricity and masonry as part of TeamWorks, Delaware Association of SkillsUSA’s 2012 state-level construction trades competition. This event requires a team of four to build a joint project in six hours or less, demonstrating their preparation for employment in multiple elements of residential construction. Team members must analyze a project drawing, write an action plan, give a presentation, and demonstrate their ability to work as a team.

Each team also will be judged on cleanliness of the jobsite, timeliness of completing the project, and proper inventory of tools and equipment.

The state event will be held on Thursday, March 1 and Friday, March 2 at New Castle County Vo-Tech School District’s St. Georges Technical High School, 555 Hyetts Corner Road, Middletown. Expected to participate are four teams of high school and college students competing for gold, silver and bronze medallions and industry awards.

Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation is helping to address the country’s growing skilled worker shortage and skills gap by contributing $1.5 million to SkillsUSA programs this year. Lowe’s has awarded grants to more than half of SkillsUSA state associations, including Delaware, for their 2012 TeamWorks events.

“TeamWorks competitions are unique in providing hands-on experience in construction trades for today’s youth,” said Marshall Croom, chairman of Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. “Lowe’s is proud to support TeamWorks. We share the same passion in motivating and inspiring future leaders for careers where skilled workers are in demand.”
