Delaware Schools Invited to Apply for Inaugural National Green Ribbon Award
Delaware Secretary of Education Dr. Lillian M. Lowery invites public and private K-12 schools across the state to apply to be a state nominee for the U.S. Department of Education's Green Ribbon Schools award, which will recognize the highest performing green schools in the nation.
The initiative -- which is in its pilot year -- will provide national recognition to schools for exemplary achievement and considerable progress toward the three pillars established in the program: 1) energy efficient buildings; 2) healthy students and school environment; and 3) environmental literacy of all graduates.
Each of the 35 participating state agencies may submit up to four nominations for the award to the U.S. Department of Education.
Lowery encourages schools to become familiar with the Green Ribbon Schools initiative. Information and resources are available on the official Green Ribbon Schools website (www.ed.gov/programs/green-ribbon-schools).
Delaware schools may apply online for the award here: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/798738/Green-Ribbon-Schools-Sample-Delaware-Application-with-Resources-February-1-2012
The application deadline is March 1. Delaware will choose its nominees in March, and federal officials will announce national winners in April.
About The Program
The U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools will recognize schools that save energy, reduce costs, feature environmentally sustainable learning spaces, protect health, foster wellness, and offer environmental education to boost academic achievement and community engagement. The recognition award is part of a larger U.S. Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about practices proven to result in improved student engagement, academic achievement, graduation rates, and workforce preparedness, as well as a government-wide aim to increase energy independence and economic security.
Please note:
U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools is a federal recognition award and should not be confused with any green schools program conducted by non-governmental entities.
