Schools Across State to Mark Digital Learning Day
Media invited to attend programs in each county
Schools across Delaware will host events on Wednesday in conjunction with Digital Learning Day, a national awareness day to celebrate great teaching, encourage more personalized and relevant learning, and work to ensure that every child has access to the best learning experiences. More information on the national movement is available here: www.digitallearningday.org. Gov. Jack Markell also has issued a proclamation recognizing the day in Delaware.
Reporters and photographers are invited to visit any of the following schools on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Please RSVP to the local contact listed below if you plan to attend and to set up times for your visit. Availability varies.
New Castle County
- Christina School District's Wilson Elementary: Teacher Megan Grillo supports student learning in the school's technology lab, where students work on projects such as a research assignment in which they use their favorite search engines and create a PowerPoint presentation using pictures/graphics, sound and animation to showcase their findings. - Red Clay Consolidated School District's A.I. duPont High School: The school will host a "App"y Hour from 2:45 to 4 p.m. Teachers and librarians can get up-to-speed with apps with the help of guest experts. Participants also will swap information about favorite apps and find out about classroom options. The school is located at 50 Hillside Road in Greenville. Contact Pati Nash at 552-3715.
Kent County
- Capital School District's Central Middle School: Teacher Terri Sharpe's seventh grade students are working with economics standard 3 in their social studies classes. The standard asks student to demonstrate the ways in which the means of production, distribution and exchange in different economic systems have a relationship to cultural values, resources and technologies. The students will be looking specifically at standard of living and what factors help accurately predict a country's standard of living. They will do this by conducting some research, make some predictions and analyzing their conclusions then applying their new knowledge. The school is located at 211 Delaware Avenue in Dover. Sussex County
- Indian River School District's North Georgetown Elementary: Teachers Audrey Carey and Jamie Hudson recognize technology is the universal language that reaches across language and instructional barriers. Combined with a focus on differentiated instruction, technology integration, professional development, data collection, and evaluation present throughout the Technology Advancing Proficiency in English Language Learners (TAPE) Program, students increase technology access and are provided with collaborative learning opportunities to raise achievement. For example, students on iPads are able to take their writings and transform them into their own books with illustrations and recordings to make them come alive. Students are also able to practice their fluency by recording their voice, then playing it back to really hear how they sound when reading. The school is located at 664 N. Bedford St. in Georgetown.
