Media Invited to Join Governor's Tour of Educational Unit at HRYCI

The Department of Correction (DOC) is offering interested media outlets the opportunity to join Governor Markell on a tour of the full-time education housing unit inside the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington. Attending media will have the opportunity to speak with inmates actively participating in the program and with key DOC and Department of Education (DOE) personnel involved in directing the program. The tour will take place Tuesday, August 23 from 10-11:30 a.m.

To facilitate entry into the prison, all media outlets need to confirm attendance with DOC Public Information Officer John Painter.

Facts & Figures on The Education Housing Unit:

  • The unit, formally known as Q-Pod, was transitioned from a traditional housing unit into a full-time education housing unit in September 2010.
  • Sixty (60) inmates live on the tier and dedicate their waking hours to improving their education. Breaks occur only during recreation time, scheduled visits, and medical appointments.
  • Based upon their skill level, participants study in the areas of Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Educational Development (GED) or a high school diploma program.
  • Inmates and community volunteers work as tutors and facilitators.
  • Since its inception: 
    • More than 100 individuals have participated in the educational programming offered on the tier.
    • For students who started at the high intermediate level of instruction, 24 GEDs and four (4) James H. Groves diplomas have been attained.
    • Thirty-nine (39) Certificates of Attainment (recognition of level gains in Math or Reading for those who haven’t attained a GED or diploma) have been awarded.
