2011 DIAA State Champions in Sportsmanship Award Winners
The Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association [DIAA] offers an annual statewide competition in sportsmanship. It is a competition against a set of ten standards, not against other schools. The process is demanding and involves the total school community being involved.
The DIAA believes that athletics are an extension of the classroom and that they provide special learning opportunities beyond the normal school day. Athletic programs conducted among DIAA member schools are designed to provide the laboratory where values are learned, appreciated and exhibited. Citizenship, leadership, integrity and ethics are critical elements in interscholastic sports. By developing these character traits, athletics performs a valuable aid to society.
This year a record sixteen DIAA member schools received the award, including first time recipients: Woodbridge, Seaford and Milford High Schools. Previous winners McKean and AI duPont High Schools took home the award this year after a two-year absence. Conrad School of Science won its second straight award, while Cape Henlopen and Lake Forest High Schools, Caravel Academy and Phillis Wheatley Middle School all garnered their third straight award.
Caesar Rodney notched its fourth Award and Wilmington Christian, Concord and Sussex Tech each won for the fifth straight time. The two schools that continue to find new and innovative methods for promoting sportsmanship are Tower Hill School with its sixth straight award and William Penn High School with its unprecedented 14th award in the 15-year history of the program. This year's winners bring the total number of member schools who have won the award at least once to 20.
