Charter School Support Program Underway
Representatives from 10 charter schools will gather at Providence Creek Academy Charter School in Clayton on Thursday as part of the state’s inaugural Charter School Support Program.
The theme of Thursday’s day-long session – a combined effort of the Delaware Department of Education’s Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development Workgroup, Accountability Resources Workgroup and Charter School Office – is “Focus on Curriculum: Taking Aim at Learning Targets.” Participants will learn more about the state’s new Common Core State Standards, the Delaware Recommended Curriculum and how both can improve teaching and learning at their charter schools. A previous session of the program focused on human capital, and a third segment on formative assessment is scheduled for July.
The participating schools are ones that will be reviewed for renewal in the fall, schools that were reviewed for renewal last fall and are meeting outstanding conditions, schools that will open for the first time in September and schools that are receiving the highest allocations of federal Race to the Top funding. Representatives from a group that plans to submit an application for a new charter school next year also are attending.
“This is a great opportunity for our charter schools to get extra support and technical assistance,” Secretary of Education Lillian M. Lowery said. “This summer training will help them support strong teaching and learning in their schools’ classrooms.”
Charter schools are tuition-free public schools that serve as an alternative to parents and students to traditional district schools. Delaware’s charter school law passed in 1995. Currently the state has 19 charter schools, 17 of which are chartered by the state. Red Clay Consolidated School District is the authorizer for the other two. The state has approved three more schools to open this fall.
