Summer Stem Program Launches in Seaford
About 100 elementary school children from the Seaford School District will be the first in Delaware to take part in Engineering is Elementary, a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or STEM-focused program.
With the support of Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) science education associates and specialists who are modeling the curriculum for district teachers, the Seaford Junior Tech Academy began Monday at Blades Elementary. It will run Mondays through Thursdays until July 28. The project-based summer learning program targets rising first- through sixth-graders with summer enrichment including thematic studies and weekly field trips to places such as Dover, Frontier Town in Ocean City, Md., Trap Pond, Assateague Island and the Salisbury Zoo.
During the six-week program, the students -- who were selected based on their need for extra help in reading, math or writing -- will learn about citizenship, have the chance to be an artist-in-residence, create their own books and much more. The final week will include a festival, where they will celebrate themselves as learners along with their parents and community. The students will showcase their artwork from the summer and portfolios of what they learned. They also will present a quilt they are making for Quilts of Valor to a local military family.
Seaford Junior Tech Academy is sponsored by the Seaford School District Parent and Family Resource Center. Transportation and lunch are provided each day.
DDOE staff will launch a statewide Engineering is Elementary training for all elementary science teachers on Aug. 21.
