Two Delaware Students Named U.S. Presidential Scholars

"These are well-deserved honors. Both are exceptional students who are leaders in and out of the classroom," Lowery said.
Cain of Seaford is a senior at Seaford High School in Seaford. Lamberton of Newark is a senior at Salesianum School in Wilmington.
From nearly 3.2 million graduating high school seniors, about 3,000 students were identified as candidates for the program and about 560, including six from the First State, were named semifinalists. One young man and one young woman were chosen from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and from families of U.S. citizens living abroad as Presidential Scholars. Another 15 students were selected at large, and 20 were chosen from the visual and performing arts.
The scholars all have demonstrated leadership, scholarship, contribution to school and community, and outstanding accomplishments in the arts, sciences, humanities and other fields of interest.
All scholars will be honored during the program's national recognition events in June in Washington, D.C. During the expenses-paid trip, the scholars will meet with government officials, educators, authors, musicians and scientists. They will receive Presidential Scholars medallions at a White House-sponsored ceremony.
Each scholar is asked to identify one teacher who has most influenced him or her, and those educators also will be invited to the recognition events. The educators will be honored at a special reception and receive Teacher Recognition awards.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. In 1979, it was expanded to also recognize students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, literary and performing arts.
