Delaware Students Thank Teachers for Their Help, Care and Dedication
As the nation celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week this week, Delaware’s students are sharing why their public school teachers are so great.
“I feel like [he] has a heart 3 times the average size because he cares for all of us, and I feel that he doesn’t get many thank you’s for it.” Those words of Sunnyside Elementary third-grader Christopher Marr about his teacher, Billy Davis, sum up well the sentiment of the almost 1,000 essays the Delaware Department of Education received in its recent Teacher Appreciation Essay Contest,. Children from kindergarten through 12th grade from across the state shared why their public school teachers are great, and many of their stories expressed how grateful they are for the extra time and care their educators give to help them succeed.
Three winners -- one each in elementary, middle and high school categories – will be named Friday. The student writers will win $50 gift cards, and their honored teachers will receive $100 gift cards and a little time off, as Former Secretary of Education Lillian Lowery takes over their classrooms for a half a day to give them a much-deserved break.
In the meantime, we’ve shared all of the essays online, categorized by school. Readers will find the children’s words honest and heart-warming, the honored educators inspiring.
Like the children, Secretary of Education Lillian M. Lowery and the Delaware Department of Education say “thank you” to these dedicated professionals for all they do every day.
