School Bus Drivers Take Home Awards in Annual Safety Competition

Thirty-three school bus drivers competed in the annual School Bus Roadeo Saturday at Smyrna Middle School. The school bus safety competition is designed to recognize excellence in school bus drivers while demonstrating skills needed in their demanding jobs. Events during the competition included: written test, bugged bus, offset alley, railroad crossing, straight line, right turn, back-in to a dock, parallel park, decreasing clearance, and bus stop. All contestants received a certificate of participation. The following individuals achieved the highest scores in their category and received plaques provided by the Delaware Association of Pupil Transportation Officials:

District
1st Suzanne Green – Brandywine School District
2nd Lamont Gorman- Brandywine School District
3rd James Coffield – Brandywine School District

Contractor
1st Chad Crawford- Larkin’s Bus Service
2nd Gregory Hayes- Advanced Student Transportation
3rd Rachel Hurt- Hilton Bus Service

The district and contractor driver competition winners received school bus mail boxes compliments of I.G. Burton (Blue Bird school bus distributor) and special license plates for their school buses which identifies them as a category winner. Additionally, they are eligible to enter the 2011 School Bus Driver International Safety Competition to be held in conjunction with the National School Transportation Association Convention and Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Md., on July 16-17, 2011.
Chad Crawford was the overall champion. He will receive a magnetic vinyl placard in the shape of a school bus with his name on it for the inside of the bus, so his students will be aware of his special achievement.
