Six Delaware Students Named Semifinalists in U.S. Presidential Scholars Program
Bill Encourages School Districts to Make Earlier Employment Offers to New Teachers
Secretary of Education Lillian M. Lowery congratulates six Delaware students who have been named semifinalists in the 2011 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. From nearly 3.2 million graduating high school seniors, about 3,000 students were identified as candidates for the program and about 560 have been named semifinalists. Up to 141 students will be chosen as 2011 U.S. Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
“These students exemplify not just outstanding academic and artistic achievement but also school leadership and community involvement,” Lowery said. “They make me, and Delaware, proud.”
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. In 1979, it was expanded to also recognize students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, literary and performing arts.
The Commission on U.S. Presidential Scholars will meet this month to select the winners. As with the semifinalists, the scholars are chosen on the basis of their accomplishments in academics and the arts, leadership and school/community involvement.
Scholars will be announced in May.
Delaware’s semifinalists are:
- Molly Cain of Seaford (Seaford High School)
- Kim Fabian of Newark (Charter School of Wilmington)
- Rachel Fry of Hockessin (Charter School of Wilmington)
- Lincoln Lamberton of Newark (Salesianum School)
- Jacob Sackett-Sanders of Wilmington (Cab Calloway School of the Arts)
- Brianna Tong of Newark (Charter School of Wilmington)
