Annual Safety Competition to Test School Bus Driver Skills

Who: School bus drivers from numerous Delaware school districts and school bus contractors

What: Annual Delaware School Bus Roadeo Driver Safety Competition. Events will include a written test, a pre-trip inspection and negotiating a driving course (bugged bus, offset alley, railroad crossing, straight line, right turn, back-in to a dock, parallel park, decreasing clearance, and bus stop).

When: 10 a.m., Saturday, April 16, 2011
Where: Smyrna Middle School, 700 Duck Creek Parkway, Smyrna
Why: The school bus safety competition is designed to recognize excellence in school bus drivers while demonstrating skills needed in their demanding jobs. The top two competitors will be eligible to enter the 41st International School Bus Driver Safety Competition to be held in conjunction with the National School Transportation Association Convention on July 16-17, 2011 in Baltimore

Previous Years’ Result: The 2009 annual School Bus Roadeo was held on Saturday, April 25 at Smyrna Middle School and included 26 school bus drivers competing in two categories -
district driver and contractor driver. All contestants received a certificate of participation. The following individuals achieved the highest scores in their category and received plaques provided by the Delaware Association of Pupil Transportation Officials:

1st James Coffield – Brandywine School District
2nd Suzanne Green- Brandywine School District
3rd Monty Byrd – Red Clay Consolidated School District

Contractor
1st Leon Roberts-Cale- Advanced Student Transportation
2nd Barry Larkin- Larkin’s Bus Service
3rd Chris King- Advanced Student Transportation

The 2010 annual School Bus Roadeo was held on Saturday, May 1 at Smyrna Middle School. Twenty-nine school bus drivers competed in two categories: district driver and contractor driver. The following individuals achieved the highest scores in their category and received plaques provided by the Delaware Association of Pupil Transportation Officials:

3rd Debbie Smith – Red Clay Consolidated School District

Contractor
1st Chad Crawford- Larkin’s Bus Service
2nd Chris King- Advanced Student Transportation
3rd Jacob Sawyer- Dover Leasing Company
