Long Neck and Lake Forest North Elementary Schools Win National Recognition

(Dover, DE.) Long Neck Elementary School in Millsboro, Delaware and Lake Forest North Elementary School in Felton, Delaware have been selected as 2010 National Title I Distinguished Schools. Both schools were  honored during the 2011 National Title I Conference in Tampa, FL. last week. The conference attracted more than 3,000 Title I professionals from across the country who gathered to honor these schools as well as to share best practices and learn about innovative education programs.

Title I is the largest federally funded, pre-collegiate education program in the country, providing more than $17 billion in federal aid to schools and districts serving students in poverty. The goal of Title I is to ensure that all children, especially those living in economically disadvantaged conditions, have the opportunity to receive a high quality education. Schools selected for national recognition must have a poverty rate of at least 35 percent for the selected year and have met or exceeded state standards for making adequate yearly progress for two or more consecutive years.

Long Neck Elementary School was selected for its outstanding performance in exceptional student achievement for two or more years. Dr. Charlynne J. Hopkins is the principal of Long Neck Elementary School, which is in the Indian River School District.

Lake Forest North Elementary School was selected for its outstanding performance in closing the achievement gap between student groups. Brenda G. Wynder is the principal of Lake Forest North Elementary School, which is in the Lake Forest School District.

Delaware State Title I Distinguished Schools include:

  • Robert S. Gallaher Elementary School, Christina School District, Jacqueline Lee, Principal;
  • Lake Forest East Elementary School, Lake Forest School District, Susan Piavis, Principal.

Also designated as Delaware State Title I Distinguished Honorees are:

  • W. Reily Brown Elementary School, Caesar Rodney School District, Craig Wearden, Principal;

  • Georgetown Elementary School, Indian River School District, Lesia Jones, Principal;
  • Hartly Elementary School, Capital School District, Tammy Augustus, Principal;
  • Lake Forest South Elementary School, Lake Forest School District, Dr. Bridget Amory, Principal;
  • May B. Leasure Elementary School, Christina School District, Deirdra Aikens, Principal;
  • Joseph M. McVey Elementary School, Christina School District, Joan French, Principal;
  • Evelyn I. Morris Early Childhood Center, Milford School District, Elizabeth Conaway, Principal;

  • Richard A. Shields Elementary School, Cape Henlopen School District, Jennifer Nauman, Principal;

The National Title I Distinguished School program began in 1986 is an annual recognition for Title I schools showing remarkable improvement and innovation.
