More Delaware Students Take Advanced Placement Exams

Release Date: Feb 10, 2011 7:22 AM

(Dover, DE.)  More Delaware students continue to take Advanced Placement (AP®) exams according to the College Board’s 7th Annual AP® Report to the Nation released earlier today.  In 2010, 2,149 Delaware public high school seniors took AP® exams, representing almost a 5% increase from the previous year. Delaware’s 2010 participation rate of 28.1% is on par with the national participation rate of 28.3%.

Delaware students also earned more “3’s” out of a possible score of 5 on AP® exams than in 2009, and Delaware led the nation with the highest mean score on the Macroeconomics exam (3.99 out of a possible 5) in 2010.

Overall, 53.2% of all AP exams taken by the Delaware class of 2010 earned a 3 or higher. Many institutions of higher education will waive requirements for those courses in which a student earns a 3 or higher, thereby saving our students valuable financial resources.

The percentage of Delaware Seniors taking AP® exams has steadily increased over the last 10 years, from 13.3% in 2001 to 28.1% in 2010.

Delaware’s Education Plan includes a commitment to expand both AP® participation and performance, particularly among underserved populations. “More students taking AP® exams means that we are preparing more young people for the possibility of college or further education,” said Governor Jack Markell.  “One of my priorities as Governor is to make sure we are doing a better job getting our students ready for the world in which they will ultimately compete for jobs.”

As part of Delaware’s Education Plan, the Delaware Department of Education is increasing supports so that students earn a 3 or higher on AP® exams.

Secretary of Education Lillian M. Lowery said, “We will be dramatically expanding AP® courses over the next several years. We are instituting supports for students as early as middle school to ensure that our students, particularly those in traditionally underserved subgroups, have the opportunity to take AP® courses and succeed on the exam.”

In addition to providing more support for students taking AP® exams, DDOE will be offering AP® Summer Institutes through the state’s Race to the Top grant to AP® teachers to help their students earn a 3 or better on the AP® exams.  These Institutes are expected to increase both the quantity and the quality of the AP® courses offered to students, by training more teachers on effective instruction of AP® classes.  For more information on the AP® Summer Institutes, please visit:  http://www.doe.k12.de.us/.
