State Board of Education to Consider Stronger Core Standards for Delaware Schools as School Begins
Former Secretary Lowery urges adoption of Common Core Standards as part of major reform effort to better prepare students for college and careers

(Dover, DE.) - The Delaware State Board of Education will consider tomorrow whether Delaware should rise to the challenge of meeting national Common Core Standards.
The Board will consider adoption of national Common Core Standards at its meeting Thursday, August 19, at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Department of Education’s Cabinet Room in the Townsend Building, 401 Federal Street in Dover.
Common Core Standards are clear, rigorous standards for what should be learned in every public school in every state in the Union. The Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). Governor Jack Markell helped drive the curriculum improvement effort and serves co-chair of the Common Core Standards Initiative for the National Governor’s Association.
"As Delaware's children go back to school, the State Board of Education will be deciding how we can best prepare those children to graduate ready to succeed in work or college," said Education Secretary Lillian Lowery.
The research-based Common Core Standards were developed in coordination with education and business leaders, parents, and other experts across the nation to address inconsistencies in basic competencies.
The standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education careers. The proposal to adopt the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics in Delaware is part of a plan to strengthen schools and students to better prepare students for college and career success. Former Secretary Lowery recently announced a plan for major reform of education in Delaware in the statewide effort to make significant academic gains under the "Race to the Top" program.
The Delaware Department of Education has proposed the immediate incorporation of the Common Core Standards from Kindergarten through 12th grade to strengthen the existing curriculum known as DE Prioritized Curriculum. If approved, the Department of Education would work with school districts this fall to train teachers to incorporate the new curriculum standards into their lessons throughout the new school year.
