Caesar Rodney Students Grand Champions at State Fair
---Second annual Healthy Foods Contest provides scholarships---
(Dover, DE.) Thanks to the popularity of televised cooking shows, Americans have a renewed interest in food preparation with healthy cooking being the key to culinary success. Delaware Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) teamed with the Delaware State Fair, Millman’s Appliances in Rehoboth Beachand Nemours Health and Prevention Services to host the second annual Healthy Foods Contest held at the Delaware State Fair. News reporter Jimmy Hoppa of WBOC-TV was the host for the event.
Teams of up to three members faced off as they prepared a healthy appetizer, entrée, and dessert for a panel of judges. In order to compete in the final rounds, students participated in a preliminary round of competition held on May 6th at the Collette Center in Dover. The event was judged by chefs from Bonz Restaurant.
The grand champion team was from CaesarRodney High School. Team members were:Alex Billups,Sarah Wickham and Natalie Swierzbinski along with theirteacher Krista Durbano.
The first place high school team was from Lake Forest High School. Members of the team were: Laura Reynolds, Chris Gulledge, and Jaicelyn Barlow along with their teacher Beth Reynolds.
The middle school contest ended in a tie with the two teams from Postlethwait Middle School. Members were Abby Chow, Makayla Whitt, Emma D’Apollo, Monica Joseph, Abby Wearden, and Madi Cluff. Kellie Wilson was the teacher for both teams.
Each member of the Grand Championteam received a $1,000 renewable scholarship to Johnson and Wales University. The first place high school team each received a $750 renewable scholarship. The winning middle school team received gift cards. Each teacher was awarded appliance gift certificates to Millman’s Appliances in Rehoboth Beach.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan was joined by U.S. Senator Tom Carper and U.S. Representative Michael Castle to present awards to the students. Following the awards students attended the rehearsal of the Paula Deen show in the Grandstand.
Members of the FCCLA State Officer Leadership Team assisted at the competition and distributed cookbooks to the audience. Each cookbook contains all the recipes from the contest. State officers included: Amy Micklos (president, Newark High School); Mark Rice (first vice-president, Lake Forest High School); Alex Cristo (vice-president, Lake Forest High School); and Samantha Cristo (vice-president, Caesar Rodney High School).
