Governor and Education Secretary Accept Donation of Black History Program DVDs
--DVD will be distributed to all Delaware Public School Libraries--
(Wilmington, DE) The first copies of a Black History program donated by the DuPont company were handed to Governor Jack Markell and Former Secretary of Education Lillian Lowery at P.S. duPont Middle school in Wilmington today. The site of the donation was significant since Pierre S. duPont provided extraordinary philanthropic support to the Delaware education system with particular focus on African-American students.
"Pierre DuPont, for whom this school is named, was a visionary who devoted a lot of time and energy in ensuring education would be made available to African-American children in the early 1920’s. In keeping with that tradition, DuPont wanted to make this presentation today and highlight the contributions made by African Americans," said Tom Sager, DuPont Senior Vice-President and General Counsel.
"DuPont takes great pride in helping to educate the children of Delaware in the area of achievement of African Americans." said Chyrrea Sebree, DuPont Corporate Counsel. "No matter what age or color you are, you will find inspiration in this program." Chyrrea Sebree, DuPont’s Corporate Counsel and Tom Sager, DuPont Senior Vice President and General Counsel, donated the 12-minute program titled "In Our Lifetime." Ms. Sebree serves as the president of the Legal Black Employee’s Network (LBEN) and was actively involved with the production. Mr. Sager is the corporate sponsor for LBEN and was responsible for the production of the program.
"This is one of the most powerful programs I have seen honoring the contributions of African Americans," said Governor Markell. "The individuals portrayed in the program are role models for all of us."
Former Secretary Lowery echoed the Governor’s remarks. "This DVD highlights the remarkable achievements of brilliant African Americans such as Thurgood Marshall, Dr. Ben Carson, Jackie Robinson and George Washington Carver. Either as a Supreme Court Justice or a world renowned neurosurgeon or a gifted athlete or scientist, these people shaped the lives of America. I applaud the efforts of DuPont in supporting our education initiatives."
The Delaware Department of Education will assist in making distribution of DVDs to every public school library statewide.
