2010 NAEP Reading Results Released
---Scores in Grade 4 and 8 Outpace Nation---
(Dover, DE.) Earlier today, results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Reading assessment were released by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The NAEP assessments, known as the “Nation’s Report Card,” were administered to all fourth and eighth grade public schools in Delaware from January through March of 2009.
Grade 4 Reading
In 2009, the average score of fourth-grade public school students in Delaware was 226. Delaware’s score of 226 was equal to the state’s average score in 2007 (225) but higher than the average score in 1998 (212) and in the first NAEP assessment in 1992 (213).
Delaware’s 2009 average score of 226 was higher than the average score of 220 for public school students in the nation. In 2009, the average score for Delaware’s public schools was higher than those in thirty-one states/jurisdictions, lower than those in six, and not significantly different from fourteen states/jurisdictions.
In the NAEP achievement levels, the percentage of students in Delaware who performed at or above the NAEP Basic level was 73% in 2009. Delaware’s percentage of students at or above Basic was significantly higher than the nation’s public schools (66%). As seen in the chart below, Delaware reduced the number of students at the Below Basic level by 20% since 1998. During this same time period, the number of Delaware students at the Basic level increased 7%, the Proficient level has increased 10% and the number of student at the Advanced level increased 2%.

Grade 8 Reading
In 2009, the average score of eighth-grade public school students in Delaware was 265 and remained above the national public school average of 262. The 265 average score for Delaware in 2009 was not significantly different from their average score in 2007 (265) but was higher than their average score in 1998 (254). In 2009, the average score in Delaware public schools was higher than those in nineteen states/jurisdictions, lower than those in fourteen, and not significantly different from eighteen states/jurisdictions.
The percentage of students in Delaware who performed at or above the NAEP Basic level was 78% in 2009. This percentage was not significantly different from that in 2007 (77%) but was significantly greater than that in 1998 (64%). Delaware’s percentage of students who performed at or above the NAEP Basic level (78%) was significantly higher than the percentage of students in national public schools (74%). As the chart below indicates, Delaware reduced the number of students at the Below Basic level by 14% since 1998. During this same time period, the number of Delaware students at the Basic and Proficient achievement levels has increased.
