Kuumba Academy Charter School Closes Due to Illness

Release Date: Oct 14, 2009 1:57 PM

(Dover, DE.)  The Kuumba Academy Charter School, located on North Market Street in Wilmington, closed its school today due to an increase in the number of staff and students experiencing flu-like symptoms.

As reported to the Department of Education (DOE), the school's administrator, Dr. Sondra Shippen, wrote that this past Monday, 32 students (enrollment 250) reported absent which was a count considerably higher than the average absentee rate.  Of the 32 students absent, 21 were for illness; six students were confirmed as having H1N1.  That same day, two staff members were sent home with fever exceeding 100 degrees.

Yesterday, student and staff absenteeism increased.  Thirty-seven students were absent.  Additionally, ten students were sent home with fevers exceeding 100 degrees.  Two staff members were also sent home with high fever.  Six additional staff members indicated they were suffering from flu-like symptoms and would not report to school today.  In all, 12 of 32 staff members were unable to report to work today.

Members of the Governance Committee of Kuumba Academy conferred yesterday evening and based upon the number of staff and students with flu-like symptoms, made the decision to close the school today, tomorrow and Friday and will reopen on Monday, October 19th.
