States International Education Initiatives to Benefit from Delaware Tech’s Technological Savvy
DOVER- Delaware Technical & Community College’s reputation for being a resource for technologically advanced programs and services is well known to its students as evidenced by continued growth in enrollment and the success of job-ready graduates. Delaware’s Department of Education (DOE), Department of Technology and Information (DTI) and the Académie de Créteil (France’s second largest academic region similar to a state in the US in its educational function) are taking advantage of Delaware Tech’s Video Teleconferencing Bridge Technology to make the cyber connection for an interactive education conference on Wednesday, October 21, 2009.
Gregory Fulkerson, Ph.D., Education Associate for World Languages and International Education for DOE stated, “The collaboration between France and Delaware has been ongoing resulting in enhanced learning opportunities for students in several French schools as well as elementary to high school age children in 19 Delaware schools.” Added Dr. Fulkerson, “Up to this point, students have been able to interact with each other on topics including language development, social studies and cultural enrichment.”
Randy Reynolds, DTI’s education liaison, said that since these interactions have only been between two locations (one French and one Delaware school) the servicing technology has been using SKYPE as the service technology.
Through the collaborative efforts of DTI and Delaware Tech, the October conference will be the first opportunity for Former Secretary of Education Lillian Lowery and her counterpart in France, Jean-Michel Blanquer, and Charles Rivkin, the U.S. Ambassador to France, to address French students, teachers and principals at the American Embassy in Paris and each of seven participating schools in Delaware schools utilizing Delaware Tech's Videoconferencing Bridge to facilitate the call.
Dr. Orlando J. George, Jr., College President said using Delaware Tech’s Video Conferencing Bridge Technology and the expertise of the college’s Department of Information and Educational Technology (DIET) to link participants of the conference is a perfect way to enhance the college’s own commitment to develop international educational experiences for students all over the world.
The conference will begin at 9:00 a.m. on October 21 with a welcome by Secretary Lowery from the American Embassy in Paris and will include remarks by Mr. Blanquer and Mr. Rivkin. In Paris, participating schools will have a principal, teacher and one student in attendance and here in Delaware participating schools will have all classes and teachers viewing from seven locations.
The following schools in Delaware have been involved in this ongoing educational project: Caesar Rodney High School, Riley Brown Elementary, Lake Forest Central Elementary, Appoquinimink High School, Sussex Tech High School, McKean High School, Shue-Medill Middle School, and William Penn High School.
