Students Culinary Competition to be Held at State Fair
---Students from Chipman, Mount Pleasant and Caesar Rodney to face off---
(Dover, DE) – Thanks to the popularity of televised cooking shows, Americans have a renewed interest in food preparation. A state student organization dedicated to family and consumer sciences plans to capitalize on this excitement with a new competitive event to be held at the Delaware State Fair in July.
Teaming up with Nemours Health and Prevention Services and the Delaware State Fair, the Delaware Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is hosting a Healthy Foods competition. Teams of up to three members will face off as they prepare a healthy appetizer, entrée, and dessert.
Late last week, six teams gathered at the Jack Collette Education Resource Center in Dover for the preliminary round of competition. The teams represented F. Neil Postlethwait Middle School, Mount Pleasant High School, Caesar Rodney High School, and W.T. Chipman Middle School. Each team had 90 minutes to prepare their meal for the judges and was assigned an alias so the judges could not tell which teams represented which schools.
After intense competition with a tempting array of foods and dazzling presentations, the judges selected teams from W.T. Chipman Middle School, Mount Pleasant High School and Caesar Rodney High School. These three teams will now practice and prepare to compete in the finals which will be held on Friday, July 24, at the Delaware State Fair.
The competition begins at 10am in the Free Entertainment Tent where celebrity judges will evaluate the culinary presentations. The winning team will receive a host of prizes including a major appliance for their classroom.
Team members include:
- Postlethwait Middle School: Madi Cluff, Makayla Whitt, Jazmin Wright
- Postlethwait Middle School: Shelby Voak, Sam Burns, Abby Chow
- W. T. Chipman Middle School: Gareth Carley, Zeke Blair
- Mt. Pleasant High School: Jared Boyles, Carrie Miller, Mark Huxsoll
- Mt. Pleasant High School: Shanae Fox, Matthew Guynes, Kiondra Powell
- Caesar Rodney High School: Nick Rios, Matt Wisher, Ed Yienger
