Nominations Sought for History Teacher of the Year

(Dover, DE.)  The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is seeking nominations for the annual Delaware History Teacher of the Year Award.  The Institute, in partnership with Preserve America, inaugurated the award in 2004.

The History Teacher of the Year Award is designed to promote and celebrate the teaching of American history in classrooms across the United States.  It honors one exceptional teacher of American history from each state and U.S. territory.The state winner will receive a $1,000 honorarium and will be in the running for the National History Teacher of the Year award to be selected this fall.  The winner will also receive a core archive of history books for his or her school library.

Any grade K-6 full-time teacher who teaches American history (including local and state history) as one of the subjects they are responsible for in the classroom may be nominated.  The nominated teacher must have:

  • at least three years classroom experience in teaching American history in grades K-6 and
  • evidence of creativity and imagination in the classroom that address literacy and content beyond state standards and
  • close attention to primary documents, artifacts, historic sites, and other primary materials of history, including oral history and
