Siemens Award For Advanced Placement Goes to Middletown High School
---Only school in Delaware to receive this prestigious honor---
(Dover, DE.) Appoquinimink School District’s Middletown High School has been singled out from among the state's public, private and charter schools for selection as Delaware's prestigious 2008-09 Siemens Award.
The Siemens Foundation, located in Iselin, New Jersey, honors one high school per state each year in recognition of a school’s leadership in Advanced Placement (AP) participation and performance in science, math and technology. Data for the decision is based on results supplied by The College Board in their annual Advanced Placement Report to the Nation and includes scores of all schools participating in AP programs.
The report looks at participation and performance data within the context of each school's population and its racial/ethnic demographics then uses this information to identify top-performing high schools. The nation's winning schools represent a broad range of backgrounds - large/mid-size/small, private/public, rural/urban, and socio-economic factors. Winning schools receive a $1,000 grant awarded from the Siemens Foundation to be used to support math and science education.
This year, Middletown High School had 15 AP Scholars (students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams); six AP Scholars with Honor (students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams); and one AP Scholar with Distinction - Ryan Christ - who scored a perfect "5" on five different AP exams.

“Trends continue to show that more and more of Delaware’s students are taking Advanced Placement coursework and scoring a “3” or higher on AP exams,” Said Secretary of Education Lillian M. Lowery. “Scoring a “3” or higher usually results in course credit at many colleges and universities across the country.” Added Dr. Lowery, “I wish to congratulate the students and staff of Middletown High on capturing the Siemens Award for their school and for their community.”
Recent winners of the Siemens Award include Archmere Academy (2007-2008); Concord High School (2006-2007); Alexis duPont High School (2005-2006) and Caesar Rodney High School (2003-2004).
