Harry Roberts Senior Scholar Awards Presented

(Dover, De.) The annual Harry Roberts Senior Scholar Awards, sponsored by the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA), have been given to top senior scholar-athletes across the state. Renamed after the Caesar Rodney School District superintendent who recently succumbed to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and a former DIAA board member, the Harry Roberts Senior Scholar Award denotes high school seniors who excel not only in the classroom, but on the playing field and in the community as well. This is the eleventh year these awards have been presented to outstanding scholar-athletes. The following students have received this prestigious award and scholarship for 2008:
Top Award Winners- each receives a $2,000 scholarship:

Female winner- Elizabeth Butterly, Milford High School

First Runner Up Recipients- each receives a $1,500 scholarship:

Female winner- Abigail Buchler, Indian River High School

Male winner- Nicholas Kmetz, Indian River High School
Second Runner Up Recipients- each receives a $1,000 scholarship:

Female Recipient- Alexandra Cumming, Glasgow High School

Male Recipient- Garrett Lyons III, Tower Hill School
This year, DIAA received 27 applications, 16 from females and 11 from males,” said Kevin Charles, executive director for DIAA. “The quality of the applications was extremely high and the selections were very difficult.” In addition to Charles, the selection committee included Dianne Sole, superintendent of POLYTECH School District; Joan Samonisky, Athletic Director for the Sanford School; Woody Long, Assistant Principal at Sussex Central Middle School; and Tommie Neubauer, DIAA Coordinator of Officials.
