"Odyssey of the Mind" March 1st

STATE TOURNAMENT THIS SATURDAY
--Students will show their “stuff” --

(Dover, DE.)  On Saturday, March 1st, more than 1150 students from public, private and independent schools throughout Delaware will descend onto the campus of the University of Delaware, geared up and ready to solve tough, challenging and unique problems.

Beginning at 8:00 a.m., the 28th annual “Odyssey of the Mind” State Tournament will once again challenge students to “show their stuff” as they find solutions to various interactive problems such as “The Odyssey Road Rally” with vehicle checkpoint tasks to “Classics…The Wonderful Muses”, where historical characters receive inspiration.  Other problems the competitors will face include “DinoStories,” “Tee Structure” and “The Eccentrics.”  The youngest students, in Grades K-2 will be tasked with creating a humorous performance where a character wakes up from sleep in different times and places until a “solution” is found for this “problem.”

Teams from Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Capital, Caesar Rodney, Christina, Indian River, Lake Forest, Laurel, Milford, Red Clay and Woodbridge school districts, along with students from Newark Charter School, MOT Charter School, Providence Creek Charter School, the Caravel Academy, the Independence School, Holy Cross School, St. Anne’s School and St Catherine of Sienna will create and perform.

“The Odyssey of the Mind” competition is creative problem solving at its very best,” said Debora Hansen, Education Associate for Visual and Performing Arts and Gifted and Talented Programs for Delaware’s Department of Education.  “This competition highlights the diverse abilities of many students who excel in interactive learning and creative and critical problem solving.”  Added Hansen, “This is also a great opportunity for students to not only ‘show their stuff’ but to directly apply their knowledge, skills and understanding to Odyssey of the Mind problem solutions –both in long-term and in spontaneous problem solving scenarios.”
