Renowned Illustrator/Author to Visit DE Schools

Release Date: May 15, 2006 1:00 AM

Nine Schools to Receive Visit as Part of "Delaware Reads About… Literacy Program"

Dover, Del. - May 15, 2006 Award winning illustrator and author Brian Collier, whose illustration and literary works have been seen and read by students worldwide, will visit nine Delaware public schools this week as part of the "Delaware Reads About… literacy program" which is a statewide program that began as a partnership between the Delaware Division of Libraries (DDL) and the Delaware Department of Education (DOE).

The "Delaware Reads About… literacy program" calls for Delawareans to become more involved and aware of the importance of literacy while encouraging students, library media specialists and teachers to engage in higher level thinking activities in reading. One elementary, middle, and high school in each county with the greatest number of points earned from participating in higher level reading activities based on research will receive a visit from a guest author.

Mr. Collier is a Coretta Scott King Award winning illustrator for his book "Rosa." He is also known for his collage art style for his illustrations in "Martin's Big Words" and "The Life of John Lennon." A book Collier authored and illustrated is named "Uptown" which takes you on a tour of his hometown. Collier's visit is sponsored by Comcast, the Diamond State Reading Association and the Delaware Department of Education.
