Secretary Woodruff to Visit India
Delegation Will Meet with India’s Prime Minister
Dover, Del.–March 15, 2006Secretary of Education Valerie A. Woodruff will join the Asia Society as a member of an education delegationto India from March 18-24, 2006. The delegation will also include Massachusetts’ David Driscoll,Missouri’s Kent King, Ohio’s Susan Zelman and Council of Chief State School Officer’s (CCSSO) Executive Director Tom Houlihan.Secretary Woodruff is currently President of the CCSSO.
The delegation will meet with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, visit several schools,attend meetings with several Indian ministries and U.S. foundationsand tour the Indian Institutes of Technology in the cities of Mumbai (formerly Bombay) and New Delhi.The goals of the visit are to deepen American education leaders’ understanding of India’s emergenceas a major player in the global economy; to explore how Indian schools and institutions of higher educationare contributing to this growth; and to develop ways in which American educators can better respondto India’s growth and develop areas of potential partnership with Indian counterparts.
“India is becoming a stronger presence in the areas of math, science and technology,” said Secretary Woodruff.“This is a great opportunity to see and hear first hand the work they are doing in educationand to bring ideas for best practices back to Delaware and to my colleagues across the country.”
Secretary Woodruff has been serving as president of the CCSSO since November 2005.Her term will expire this November.
