Secretary Woodruff Elected President of CCSSO
Dover, Del.–November 22, 2005 The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) in Washington D.C. has elected and confirmed their Board of Directors for 2005-2006 at the Council’s Annual Policy Forum and Business Meeting held recently in Richmond, Virginia. All board members and officers are chief state school officers and while serving on the Council’s board, continue their tenures in their respective states.

As president, Delaware’s Secretary of Education Woodruff will spend the next year working closely with her CCSSO colleagues. Valerie Woodruff expressed, “I am honored to have been chosen as president of CCSSO and am looking forward to working with the board and the members of the organization to strengthen the collective voice of public education leaders across the country.”The presidency of CCSSO is a one-year term.
Valerie Woodruff has served as secretary of education since July 1999, when she was appointed in the acting capacity by former Governor Tom Carper. She was subsequently confirmed by the Delaware Senate and then reappointed by Governor Ruth Ann Minner. Prior to being appointed secretary of education, Mrs. Woodruff served as the associate secretary for curriculum and instructional improvement for the Delaware Department of Education.
As associate secretary, her responsibilities included all curriculum areas, programs for children with disabilities, early childhood education, and school improvement and planning.She has been a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, and principal in high schools in both Maryland and Delaware. Secretary Woodruff holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, a master’s degree in guidance and counseling, and has completed graduate work in vocational education and curriculum development.
Secretary Woodruff led the development of the first School Based Wellness Center in Delaware, has served as a Thomson Fellow for the Coalition of Essential Schools, and was selected as Delaware’s Principal of the Year in 1990. She currently serves as a member of several boards including the Delaware Workforce Investment Board and its Youth Council, Jobs for Delaware Graduates, and the State Chamber of Commerce Partnership. She is also a Delaware representative to the Education Commission of the States and the Southern Regional Education Board.
