DE Students Win National Skills Competition

USA Conference POLYTECH Advisor Wins National Award

Dover, Del.–July 15, 2005 Nearly 80 Delaware trade and industrial students from five technical high schools recently attended the Skills USA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City. These students from Delcastle Technical High School, Hodgson Vocational-Technical High School, Howard High School of  Technology, POLYTECH High School and Sussex Technical High School competed against 4,700 students from around the country. Ten Delaware high school students received medals for finishing in the top three places in their respective competition. In addition, 20 Delaware students were finalists, placing in the top ten nationwide in their respective events.

Richard Carter, Student Activities Director at POLYTECH High School won the Skills USA National Advisor of the Year award. This is the first time in the forty-one year history of the organization that a Delaware Advisor has won either the region or the national competition.

Notable award recipients are as follows:
  • Dawn Naylor of POLYTECH H.S. won the Gold Medal in “Job Skill Demonstration A.”
  • Pete Hrycak of Delcastle Technical H.S. won the Gold Medal in “Telecommunications Cabling.”
  • Marcus Cross, Sean Dize, David Rex, and Amber Savage of Delcastle Technical H.S. won Silver Medals in “Team Problem Solving.”
  • Ashley Hewish of Sussex Technical H.S. won the Silver Medal in “Basic Health Care Skills.”
  • Nychelle Suggs of Delcastle Technical H.S. won the Silver Medal in “Practical Nursing.”
  • Charles O’Neill of Delcastle Technical H.S. won the Bronze Medal in “Aviation Maintenance Technology.”
  • Alexandra Stamat of Sussex Technical H.S. won the Bronze Medal in “Customer Service.”
