Delaware Nurses Honored at D.C. Conference
Senator Carper and Congressman Castle Meet with Delaware Delegation
Dover, Del.–July 15, 2005 More than 1,100 school nurses from around the country gathered in Washington, D.C. recently for the 37th Annual Conference of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN). NASN President Janis Hootman, PhD, RN, NCSN, chose“Building Tomorrow Today: Promoting the Legacy” as this year’s theme.
NASN’s annual Conference has become the premier conference for school nurses both nationally and internationally.With its focus on up-to-the-minute school health topics, important practice issues and health office management, the conference provides knowledge, ideas and networking opportunities.
Rear Admiral Kenneth P. Moritsugu, MD, current Deputy Surgeon General, urged school nurses to continue to bridge the gapsin disparities through school health services. Following his presentation, Delaware school nurses met with Senator Tom Carperand Congressman Mike Castle to discuss issues facing nurses in schools. The school nurses emphasized the need for a nursing consultant at the U.S. Department of Education to help address the health needs of children in schools. Nurses also met with staff members from Senator Joe Biden’s office.
Several Delaware nurses were given accolades during the conference. Two Delaware nurses received special recognition awards from NASN. Libby Thomas, school nurse at Thurgood Marshall Elementary in the Christiana District was recognized for her leadership in updating the national school nursing professional standards. Dr. Janice Selekman, nursing faculty at the University of Delaware, was honored for her work as author/editor of NASN’s School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text which is scheduled for release January 2006.
Madalyn Schultz Pettit, school nurse at Tower Hill School, became Delaware’s first Fellow in the NASN’s Academy of Fellows.Nancy Nadel, school nurse at Red Clay School District’s Forest Oak Elementary School was introduced as Delaware’s School Nurse of the Year, 2004-2005.Beth Mattey, school nurse at Mt. Pleasant High School in the Brandywine School District, contributed to the Poster Presentations with her work on social marketing with adolescents to effect health behaviors.
