State Honors Students Attend Scholar’s Dinner

Seniors Recognized for Outstanding Academic Prowess

Dover, Del.–May 4, 2005 Top students from Delaware’s 32 public high schools were honored this evening by government and education officials at the annual Secretary of Education’s Scholars Dinner held at the Sheraton Inn and Conference Center in Dover.

The scholars were nominated by their principals and selected for being the exemplary scholars of the graduating Class of 2005. Many students recognized this evening have received awards of state, regional or national significance.

Secretary of Education Valerie A. Woodruff, said the dinner is meant to give recognition to the students for their many achievements and to encourage them to continue to strive for excellence.“The 66 public high school seniors we recognize this evening truly exemplify academic success as well as school and community involvement. These young men and women not only have performed exceptionally well academically, but are deeply involved in their schools and in their communities.”Added Secretary Woodruff, “I applaud their outstanding efforts and wish each student a wonderful journey of success in the years ahead.”

Lieutenant Governor John Carney, Jr. agreed. “This evening, we honor 66 seniors who have demonstrated incredible commitment to their education, their schools and their communities.At the same time, we also pause to praise the incredible help and support from educators, families and friends that have helped shape the lives of our scholars.”Added Carney, “I congratulate each of our scholars on a job well done and wish them continued success in fulfilling their dreams and aspirations.”

In addition to Lieutenant Governor Carney and Secretary Woodruff, invited guests included Dr. Joseph Pika, President, State Board of Education; Katheen Thomas, Delaware’s Teacher of the Year for 2005; Senator David P. Sokola, Representative Nancy Wagner; members of the House and Senate; representatives from the business community and higher education.
