SBE to Hold 3rd Education Summit

Theme Is “Secondary Schools – Challenges and Opportunities”

Dover, Del.–April 15, 2005The Delaware State Board of Education will host the 3rd Education Summit on Tuesday, April 26th at the Dover Sheraton Inn in Dover, Delaware beginning at 8:00 a.m.The topic of the Summit is Secondary Schools – Challenges and Opportunities.

The keynote speaker will be Joseph DiMartino, the Director of Secondary School Redesign at the Education Alliance at Brown University.Mr. DiMartino also led the team that created the acclaimed Breaking Ranks 2: Strategies for Leading High School Reform.His attendance at the Summit is being sponsored by the Delaware Principals’ Academy.

In addition to Mr. DiMartino’s presentation, Mr. Michael Cohen, President of Achieve, Inc., will address the audience at lunch to discuss the recent review Achieve, Inc. concluded with regard to Delaware graduation requirements and the entrance requirements at our public institutions of higher education.

There will also be small group sessions in the morning that focus on six themes including increasing rigor, distributed leadership, personalizing learning, creating learning communities, connecting with parents and communities and leaving no child behind.

During the afternoon, attendees will participate in a town meeting forum for discussion of a variety of topics related to secondary school redesign.
