Delaware Students Continue Preparations for National Competition on U.S. Constitution
Dover, Del.–March 11, 2005 On April 29, students from Milford High School in Milford, Delaware will travel to Washington, D.C., where they will represent Delaware in the national finals of “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution,”which is the highly prestigious academic competition on the Constitution of the United States.
The Milford students—Patrick Bailey, Matt Campbell, Sydney Cartwright, Julee Farley, Jessica Fitzpatrick, Britini Jennie, Brent Leitzell, Jenna Marine, Ryan Morris, Colin Nauman, Shannon Reed, Rosie Seagraves,and Tyler Whalen—have studied for months to prepare for their role as experts testifying on constitutional issues in a simulated congressional hearing.To represent their state at the national finals, the class won first place in the state competition held on May 4th in Dover.
The first round of the national finals will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, in Arlington, Virginia on April 30th and May 1st.The competition involves entire classes making presentations and answering questions on constitutional topics before a panel of judges recruited from across the country.Constitutional scholars, lawyers, and government leaders, acting as congressional committee members, will judge the students’ performances.
The combined scores of the classes during the first two days of hearings will determine which ten teams will compete in the championship round on May 2nd in House hearing rooms on Capitol Hill.That evening, the winning classes will receive awards at a special ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Washington D.C.
During their stay in Washington, the students will tour historical sites and museums in the area and will have the opportunity to visit Delaware Senators Joseph Biden and Thomas Carper and Representative Michael Castle.
The “We the People” program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and is directed by the Center for Civic Education in Los Angeles.Lewis Huffman, Education Associate for Social Studies at the Delaware Department of Education and Chris Kenton, a social studies teacher at Polytech High School, administer the program for Delaware.Nationwide, the program is implemented at the upper elementary, middle, and high school levels and has reached more than 26.5 million students during its seventeen year history.
