DE Educators to Be Honored by Philadelphia 76ers

Nearly 2,200 Teachers and Guests Expected to Attend

Dover, Del.–November 9, 2004 The Philadelphia 76ers professional basketball organization has partnered with Delaware’s Department of Education (DOE) to host a “Sixers Salute to Delaware Educators”on Wednesday, November 10th beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. Recognition and performances will take place prior to the scheduled basketball gamebetween the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets.

Secretary of Education Valerie A. Woodruff, Delaware’s Teacher of the Year Kathleen Thomas, district superintendents, current district Teachers of the Year,and nearly 2,200 educators and their guests will descend on the Wachovia Center for an evening of teacher recognition,performances by Delaware high school bands and a stirring rendition of the National Anthem by a high school choir.

The Cape Henlopen Jazz Ensemble and the Newark High School Jazz Ensemble will perform in the main concourse area beginning at 6:00 p.m.while the Dover High School “Rolling Thunder” drum line will “rock the house” prior to the start of the game between the Sixers and the New Jersey Nets.The Sixers will also recognize newly-selected Teacher of the Year Kathleen Thomas, outgoing Teacher of the Year Rita Hovermale as well as other district Teachers of the Year at courtside.Superintendents representing the 19 public school districts in Delaware will also be highlighted, while the Middletown High School Ensemble Choir will sing the National Anthem prior to the start of the game.

Governor Ruth Ann Minner who had accepted the invitation to attend the “Sixers Salute to Delaware Educators” had to cancel her visit due to a family emergency.“I am terribly disappointed I cannot take part in the festivities recognizing our outstanding educators.However, I personally want to thank the Sixers organization for making this evening special for our teachers, administrators, support staff and their guests.”

Added Secretary of Education Valerie Woodruff, “Our teachers, support staff and administrators work hard every day to provide a solid education to our students.This evening’s event reinforces our commitment to excellence.” Added Secretary Woodruff, “I look forward to listening to our students perform, watching the 76ers in action and enjoying an evening of fun.”

Ron Gough, Public Information Officer for DOE and event coordinator for the “Sixers Salute to Delaware Public Educators” said ticket sales to this event have exceeded all expectations.“The response and participation of our teachers, administrators and support staff has been simply overwhelming. We are thrilled with the turnout of nearly 2,200 educators that will be in attendance on Wednesday.”

At halftime, the Sixers will make a presentation to Delaware Secretary of Education Valerie Woodruff. The Governor’s Policy Advisor on Education will accept a gift from the Sixers on behalf of Governor Minner.
