Dover, Del.–September 14, 2004The Department of Education (DOE) will soon be accepting applications for approval of new charter schools to open in August or September 2006.The application period is from November 1, 2004 through January 3, 2005.
Charter schools are independent public schools offered as an alternative to traditional public schools. An independent Board of Directors governs each charter school.Charter schools must be non-sectarian and non-discriminatory.Since charter schools receive federal, state and local funding, they cannot charge tuition.

A review of all submitted applications will be conducted by DOE following the deadline. If the application is found to meet all required criteria, the Secretary of Education will submit the application to the State Board of Education for final approval.
