DE Teacher Corps Program Aids Teacher Shortages
Education Loans Up to $5,000 Annually Could Be “Forgiven”
Dover, Del.–September 8, 2004 Governor Ruth Ann Minner announced Wednesday that applications are now available for the new Delaware Teacher Corps Program she proposed in her State of the State address. This program will provide financial assistance to Delaware residents who want to become teachers in critical need areas in the state’s public middle schools and high schools.
“The Delaware Teacher Corps was one of my key education initiatives this year,” Governor Ruth Ann Minner said.“This program will help us to recruit and grow our own best and brightest teachers while targeting specific needs within our schools.”
The program provides a service-repayment loan, or “loan forgiveness,” of up to $5,000 yearly to full-time students at a Delaware college or university who are enrolled in an academic program leading to teacher certification in a critical need area. First preference will be given to students who intend to teach middle and high school mathematics or science.Students who intend to teach special education in a content area will be given second priority. The service-repayment loans are renewable for up to three years of undergraduate study if the student retains at least a 2.75 grade point average (GPA).
Applicants who are high school seniors must rank in the upper half of their graduating class and have a combined score of 1050 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or a score of 25 or higher on the ACT examination.Current undergraduates are eligible to apply. They must have at least a 2.75 GPA to qualify.
“The Delaware Teacher Corps program is a tremendous opportunity for teacher candidates to not only work towards critical needs vacancies in our public schools, but also to lessen the financial impact of a college education,”said Secretary of Education Valerie A. Woodruff. “I hope qualified students will join us in our on-going quest for quality in our middle schools and high schools.”
The deadline to apply for the Delaware Teacher Corps the 2004-05 academic year is Thursday, September 30, 2004.
Applications can be downloaded from the Delaware Higher Education Commission’s website at www.doe.k12.de.us/high-ed or you can contact the Commission at 302-577-3240, 800-292-7935 (outside New Castle County).Applicants can also e-mail the Commission at dhec@doe.k12.de.us to have an application sent to them.
