Odyssey of the Mind
"Odyssey of the Mind" State Tournament This Saturday Brilliance on Display as Students Once Again Show Their "Stuff"
Dover, Del. - March 11, 2004 On Saturday, March 13th, more than 700 students from public, private and independent schools throughout Delaware and Maryland will descend onto the campus of the University of Delaware for the largest "Odyssey of the Mind" tournament in Delaware's history. Geared up and ready to solve tough, challenging and unique problems, 105 seven-member costumed teams will appear with their costumes, props and scenery in multiple venues around campus.
Beginning at 8:00 a.m., the 24th annual "Odyssey of the Mind" State Tournament will once again challenge students to "show their stuff" as they find solutions to various interactive problems such as "Balancing Act" balsa wood structure competition to "Classics…Fantastic Art." Other problems the competitors will face include "Envirover," "Strategy Sphere" and "Featured Creature." Some students will be tasked with designing and building two devices that will propel balls through a circular hoop while other teams will attempt to bring famous works of art "to life."
The Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Cape Henlopen, Capital, Christina, Indian River, Lake Forest, and Milford school districts, as well as Sussex Tech High School, the Charter School of Wilmington, Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences, Campus Community School, Caravel Academy and the Independence School will send teams to the "Odyssey." From Maryland, Kensington-Parkwood Elementary School will also compete as guests.
"The Odyssey of the Mind" program promotes higher order thinking through child directed learning and interactive participation," said Debora Hansen, Education Associate for Visual and Performing Arts and Gifted and Talented Programs for Delaware's Department of Education. "Students in this program learn to generate multiple solutions to problems and work effectively within a group while adhering to a budget and time constraints. Added Hansen, "What employer would not want employees with these exceptional skills and who at the same time are having fun?"
This year the primary problem, "Rewind With Humor," a non-competitive experience for students in grades K-2, will require teams to tell a story in reverse-from end to beginning and include at least three jokes during the performance.

The closing awards ceremonies and celebrations for the Maryland teams and Division I participants will be held at the Trabant Center beginning at 3:00 p.m. Division II and Division III participant's awards ceremonies will follow in the Carpenter Gym at 4:00 p.m.
