Statewide Professional Development Day
Public School Teachers to Sharpen Classroom Skills
Dover, Del.–October 7, 2003On Friday, October 10th, more than 5,000 public school teachers statewide will participate in the fifth annual Professional Development Day at locations throughout Delaware.Sponsored by the Department of Education, more than 40 seminars will be offered in all three counties, designed to enhance the skills of teachers, administrators and support staff.
For those teachers and support staff who have chosen not to enroll in one of these seminars, professional development will be conducted in their respective school districts.Therefore, on Friday, all educators and support staff in the state will be receiving training to further enhance their skills.
“Professional development is essential for helping educators improve support for students,” said Amelia Hodges, Education Associate for School Improvement and Quality Assurance.“Delaware’s Statewide Professional Development Day provides an opportunity for teachers, paraprofessionals, nurses, counselors and nutrition staff to communicate with each other and learn within their area of expertise.”Added Hodges, “This day also allows educational staff, statewide, to network among each other and share best practices.”
In Dover, Governor Ruth Ann Minner and Secretary of Education Valerie Woodruff will provide remarks at the Character Education Conference at the Rollins Center.Also, Bethany Yarrow, daughter of Peter Yarrow who performed with the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary, will speak and perform. More than 400 people are expected to attend.At the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Authors Steven Kellogg, Peter Afflerbach, Sharon Draper, Jacqueline Woodson and Judith Schachner will join poets Margriet Ruurs and Paul Janeczko and600 attendees at the Diamond State Reading Association conference.
In Dover, the Delaware Division of the Arts, Delaware Music Educator’s Association, Art Educators of Delaware and the Delaware Alliance for art in Education will hold an arts summit at the Sheraton Inn where525 educators have signed up to attend, while at Dover High School, 300 educators will listen to Dr. Jerry Petroff from the College of New Jersey to lecture on what can be done to produce successfulspecial education students.
