Now Accepting Applications for Charter Schools

Dover, Del August 22, 2003 The Department of Education (DOE) will soon be accepting applications for new charter schools looking to open in September 2005. The application period is from November 1, 2003 through January 2, 2004.

Charter schools are independent public schools offered as an alternative to traditional public schools.An independent Board of Directors governs each charter school. Charter schools must be non-sectarian and non-discriminatory.Since charter schools receive federal, state and local funding, they cannot charge tuition.

Each charter school's curriculum is required to address Delaware's content standards.Students who attend charter schools are required to take the Delaware Student Testing Program (DSTP) examination.

A review of all submitted applications will be conducted by DOE following the deadline.If the application is found to meet necessary criteria, the Secretary of Education will submit the applications to the State Board of Education for final approval.

Currently, there are 13 charter schools operating in Delaware:Newark Charter School; Academy of Dover; MOT Charter School; Campus Community Charter School; Charter School of Wilmington;Delaware Military Academy; East Side Charter School; Thomas A. Edison Charter School; Kuumba Academy Charter School;Marion T. Academy Charter School; Positive Outcomes Charter School; Providence Creek Academy Charter School;and Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences. Combined, student enrollment in all charter schools exceeds 6,000 students.
