DE Hosts 2003 Teacher of the Year Conference
“Best of the Best” from Across the U.S. to Discuss Literacy Issues
Dover, Del.–June 24, 2003 State Teachers of the Year from across the United States will begin arriving in Delaware tomorrow for the annual National State Teacher of the Year (NSTOY) Conference.More than 50 State Teachers of the Year and their guests will be attending this year’s conference with a focus on “Spotlighting Literacy.”
“This year’s conference was supposed to have been hosted by Guam,” said Renee O’Leary, Ph.D., Delaware’s Teacher of the Year for 1982.“However, due to several typhoons which damaged the hotels and facilities where the conference was to be held,Guam was no longer able to host the conference. When the Delaware State Teacher of the Year organization learned of the difficultiesbeing experienced by Guam, we made the offer to host the conference here in the First State.” Added O’Leary,“I am also delighted that two past State Teachers of the Year from Guam will be here as well.They have made an incredibly long journey to come to Delaware for this week’s conference.”
This week’s NSTOY conference will focus on spotlighting literacy. “We will be spending the majority of our time looking at financial, language, reading, math, history and cultural literacy,” said Ronni Cohen, Delaware’s State Teacher of the Year for 2002.“With the sessions planned both at and away from the hotel, our distinguished educators and guests will be providedwith a much greater knowledge of literacy issues they can take back into their classrooms.”
On Thursday, Citibank, a subdivision of Citigroup and a sponsor of the NSTOY conference,will offer financial literacy for all conference participants by conducting presentations on the pros and cons of credit cards,including credit products, credit scams and credit scores. That same afternoon, participants will be given a tour of historic “Old New Castle” to learn about the rich heritage of Delaware.
On Friday, numerous sessions will be held at the Embassy Suites in Newark where most conference participants are staying.Guest speakers include David Dotson, executive director for singer/actress Dolly Parton’s Dollywood Foundation Projectand the Imagination Library Program. In December 2002, Dr. O’Leary was the national recipient of the Chasing Rainbows Awardfrom Ms. Parton for overcoming great personal obstacles to become a teacher.
Chauncey Veatch, National Teacher of the Year for 2002, will also speak at the conference as will David Eldridgefrom the National Teachers Hall of Fame, John Micklos, Jr., from the International Reading Association, John Pikulski, Ph.D., Professor of Education at the University of Delaware, and Valerie A. Woodruff, Delaware’s Secretary of Education.
