2003 “Odyssey of the Mind” State Tournament

Brilliance on Display as Students Show Their “Stuff”

Dover, Del.–March 7, 2003 On Saturday, March 8th, more than 350 students from public, private and independent schools throughout Delaware and Maryland will descend onto the campus of the University of Delaware, geared up and ready to solve tough, challenging and unique problems.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the 22nd annual “Odyssey of the Mind” State Tournament will once again challenge students to “show their stuff”as they find solutions to various interactive problems such as “The Odd Pod” balsa wood structure competition to “Classics…Put a Spin On It.”Other problems the competitors will face include “Fooled Ya,” “A Scene from Above” and “The Know-It-All.”Some students will be tasked with designing and building an “Artificial Intelligent” character that must speak and move, while others will be asked to create a structure on an odd number of pods that can support as much weight as possible.

The Brandywine, Cape Henlopen, Capital, Christina, Indian River, Lake Forest, Laurel, Milford, Seaford and Smyrna school districts,as well as Newark Charter School, Charter School of Wilmington, Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences,the Caravel Academy and the Independence School will send teams to the “Odyssey.”From Maryland, North Caroline High School and West Nottingham Academy will also compete.

“The Odyssey of the Mind” competition is creative problem solving at its very best,” said Debora Hanson,Education Associate for Visual and Performing Arts for Delaware’s Department of Education.“This competition highlights the abilities of some pretty amazing students who excel in interactive learning and problem solving.”Added Hansen, “This is also a great opportunity for students to not only ‘show their stuff’ but to ‘get in the glue and get in the glitter.’”

This year, for the first time, and in a non-competitive atmosphere,students in grades K-2 will team up to create and perform a song with lyrics that help to teach something.

The competitions, locations and times are as follows:

“Fooled Ya” Trabant Student Center 11:00 a.m. - 12:20 p.m.
“Music Lessons” Trabant Student Center 12:00 noon - 12:20 p.m.

The closing awards ceremony and celebration will be held at the Bob Carpenter Sports Center beginning at 3:00 p.m.and will include special guests Senator Thomas R. Carper and Space School coordinator Dr. Stephanie Wright.
