Prominent Authors to Visit Delaware Schools

Release Date: Feb 25, 2003 1:00 AM

Renowned Authors to Visit Nine Schools for Summer Reading Initiatives

Dover, Del. - February 25, 2003 Three renowned authors, whose literary works have touched the lives of millions of students worldwide, will visit nine Delaware public schools this week as a reward to students who read the greatest number of books during a summer literacy program called "Delaware Reads about the American Dream."

Author Sharon Draper (1997 National Teacher of the Year) is known for her books for teenagers dealing with topics that are both current and topical. Jerry Pollatta is best known for his fact-filled, beautifully illustrated color children's alphabet books. Elizabeth Levy is well known for her latest series, the America's Horrible Histories. Their visits are being sponsored by the MBNA Corporation.

"Delaware Reads about the American Dream" literacy program is a statewide partnership between the Delaware Division of Libraries (DDL) and the Delaware Department of Education (DOE). The program calls for Delawareans to become more involved and aware of the importance of literacy while encouraging students to continue reading books during the summer months. This year's program is the brainchild of Valerie A. Woodruff, Delaware's Secretary of Education, and Mary Chute, former Director of State Libraries. This year's theme was also inspired by the life challenges overcome by Delaware's Governor Ruth Ann Minner, who has shown that dreams can indeed become a reality.
